Love\u27s Miracle
A GROUP OF men were sitting around a table at the Press Club in Chicago after having attended a banquet for newspapermen from different parts of the country. One of them, John Rolf, began to tell a story. Everyone at the table took an interest, for Rolf had spent seven years in Paris as foreign correspondent for the Tribune, and as editor for several local journals, the largest and most important of which was La Revue Moderne. He had come back with many fascinating stories about the Parisians which, if compiled into a book, would have made excellent material to rival even the best of best sellers
Trail records and navigational learning
An emerging wave of 'ambient' technologies has the potential to support learning in new and particular ways. In this paper we propose a 'trail model' of 'navigational learning' which links some particular learning needs to the potentialities of these technologies. In this context, we outline the design and use of an 'experience recorder', a technology to support learning in museums. In terms of policy for the e-society, these proposals are relevant to the need for personalised and individualised learning support
Parametric frequency conversion of coherent light by the electro-optic effect in KDP
We report an experiment in which interaction between an optical wave at frequency f0 and a microwave signal at fm was used to generate a coherent optical beam at f0 + fm. The interaction was provided by lossless electro-optic modulation of the dielectric constant within a laser resonator and can thus be viewed as a demonstration of parametric(3-5) interaction at optical frequencies
Interferometry and Laser Control with Solid Fabry-Perot Etalons
The use and analysis of solid Fabry-Perot etalons for interferometry and laser control are discussed and supported with experimental data. Low angle scattering is found to be an important factor influencing finesse and peak transmission. Thermal tuning sensitivity and wedge-angle control with thermal gradients are analyzed and illustrated. Control of laser oscillations using a solid-state etalon as a laser cavity end mirror is discussed. The use of the solid etalon as an optical cavity coupler is applied to the problem. of sideband energy removal from an internally modulated laser

Code generation for AMReX with applications to numerical relativity
We present a new python/SymPy based code generator for producing executable
numerical expressions for partial differential equations in AMReX-based
applications. We demonstrate the code generator capabilities for the case of
ADM formulations of numerical relativity for the constraint damped,
conformal Z4 formulations (Z4c and CCZ4). The generated spacetime solvers are
examined for stability and accuracy using a selection of checks from the
standard Apples with Apples testbeds for numerical relativity applications. We
also explore physically interesting vacuum spacetimes including head-on and
inspiraling black hole binary collisions, and investigate the simulated
gravitational waveforms from such events with the Newman-Penrose formulation of
waveform extraction.Comment: 26 pages, 15 figure
